Overtime rules
- Under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must receive at least 1.5× their regular rate for all hours over 40 in a workweek.
- Some states (e.g., California, Alaska) also require daily overtime after 8 hours in a single day — check your state law.
- Salaried employees classified as "exempt" are generally not entitled to overtime pay.
Break time deductions
- Unpaid meal breaks (typically 30–60 min) are deducted from paid work hours.
- Short rest breaks under 20 minutes are usually considered paid time under FLSA.
- Enter only unpaid break minutes in the Break column to get an accurate hours total.

How is overtime calculated?
Under U.S. federal law (FLSA), overtime is any hours worked beyond 40 in a single workweek. Overtime pay must be at least 1.5× your regular hourly rate. You can change the threshold and multiplier in the Settings panel above to match your employer's policy or local laws.
Can I track overnight shifts?
Yes. If your end time is earlier than your start time (for example, start at 10:00 PM and end at 6:00 AM), the calculator automatically detects an overnight shift and computes the correct duration by adding 24 hours.
How do I calculate overtime pay?
Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × overtime multiplier (typically 1.5). Enter your hourly rate in the Settings panel and the calculator will show your regular pay, overtime pay, and total gross pay automatically.
What is a timesheet?
A timesheet is a record of hours worked each day, used by employers to calculate payroll. It captures clock-in time, clock-out time, and any unpaid breaks. The net hours for each day are summed to produce a weekly total for determining regular and overtime pay.
What is the difference between biweekly and weekly overtime?
Weekly overtime is calculated separately for each workweek — you cannot average two weeks together. If you work 50 hours one week and 30 the next, you are owed 10 hours of overtime for week one even though the biweekly average is 40. U.S. federal law requires overtime to be calculated on a per-week basis.
