How to Use the Grade Calculator

How is a weighted grade calculated?

Each assignment's percentage score is multiplied by its weight, and the results are summed then divided by the total weight. Example:

  • Homework (20%): 85/100 = 85% → 85 × 0.20 = 17.0 pts
  • Midterm (30%): 76/100 = 76% → 76 × 0.30 = 22.8 pts
  • Final (50%): 91/100 = 91% → 91 × 0.50 = 45.5 pts
  • Weighted average: 17.0 + 22.8 + 45.5 = 85.3% (B)

Use "Equal weight" if all assignments count equally — the calculator will simply average the percentage scores.

Tips to improve your grade before finals

  • Use the Final Grade Needed tab to set a realistic target and know exactly what score to aim for.
  • Focus study time on high-weight items — a strong final exam can significantly move your average.
  • Check if your instructor drops the lowest score; entering 0 for a dropped assignment shows the true impact.
  • Ask about extra credit opportunities if your needed score exceeds 100%.
  • Track all graded work in the Assignment tab so you always know your current standing.

FAQ

How do I calculate my weighted average grade?

Multiply each assignment's percentage score by its weight, sum those products, then divide by the total weight. For example: a midterm worth 40% where you scored 80%, and a final worth 60% where you scored 90%, gives a weighted average of (80×40 + 90×60) ÷ 100 = 86%. This calculator handles the math as you type.

What do I need on my final to get an A?

Open the "Final Grade Needed" tab. Enter your current grade percentage, the weight of your existing work (e.g. 70%), and your target of 93% for an A. The calculator solves: needed = (target − current × currentWeight%) ÷ finalWeight%. It also shows what score is required for A, B, C, and D in a single table.

How are grades curved?

Curving adjusts grades upward — common methods include adding fixed bonus points, scaling to the highest score in the class, or shifting the distribution so a set percentage of students receive A's. Curves are determined by your instructor. If your instructor posts post-curve scores, enter those directly into this calculator.

What is the GPA equivalent of my percentage grade?

Common conversions: 97–100% = 4.0 (A+/A), 93–96% = 4.0 (A), 90–92% = 3.7 (A-), 87–89% = 3.3 (B+), 83–86% = 3.0 (B), 80–82% = 2.7 (B-), 77–79% = 2.3 (C+), 73–76% = 2.0 (C), 70–72% = 1.7 (C-), 67–69% = 1.3 (D+), 63–66% = 1.0 (D), 60–62% = 0.7 (D-), below 60% = 0.0 (F). Exact scales vary by institution.
